Herbert Hoover High School first opened its doors in September 1963. Only starting to integrate the 9th grade in the class year of 1992-1993. Through all these years however- Herbert Hoover would only begin to excel academically in recent times, originally being one of the worst academically achieving schools in the state, as of 2022 we are the 6th best overall school in the state. Herbert Hoover High School would continue to have classes in the Clendenin school until 2016 when the school would flood beyond repair.

The flood of 2016 devastated the Elk River community. Herbert Hoover High School was destroyed and unable to be salvaged. The following year, high school students with the help of the Elkview Middle School, continued their education halving the days at the nearby school. EMS students went in the morning while HHHS students went in the afternoon. The construction of temporary portables started in 2016 and by 2017 all HHHS students were finishing their high school years there. The new official Herbert Hoover High School started construction on January 22, 2020. The school was complete and first opened up to the students in the 23-24 school year.
